Residents of Cajón del Maipo will be able to decide on the restoration of the old Medialuna or the enhancement of the Municipal Camping with greater infrastructure following the decision of the Program's Executive Committee.

Cajón Elige program enters a decisive phase for residents to choose alternatives that boost tourism in San José

January 30, 2024

In order to promote tourism in San José de Maipo, the Executive Committee of the Cajón Elige Program in Alto Maipo voted for two projects, proposed by the community itself, to continue the process of popular choice.

The two chosen alternatives fall within the realm of enabling spaces and infrastructure for local and tourist use. One of them involves the restoration of the Medialuna de San José, aiming to replace the existing old infrastructure.

The other option is related to improving the Municipal Camping and providing it with new facilities, such as an entrance portal, information support, control booth, sanitary services, parking, among other advancements.

Cajón Elige is a social investment program with a citizen perspective that, through the participation of all community stakeholders, seeks to bring to life proposals for tourist development in San José de Maipo.

"We are very hopeful about the decision that the residents will make regarding the strengthening of such an important activity for the people of Cajón del Maipo, which is tourism. With Cajón Elige, we aim for the community itself to decide where the main needs are, so that as a company, we can contribute with the financing," stated Jimena Krautz, Head of Community Management at AES Chile's Cordillera Plants.

Krautz also expressed gratitude for the support from various community and municipal instances in the initiative, which have been strengthening the projects.

To reach this milestone, different preparation stages were completed, such as presenting to municipal authorities and subsequent work in which residents submitted their initiatives through 110 organizations distributed in 15 localities in the commune. Through a plebiscite, the final decision will be made by the residents. To ensure an informed vote, a campaign will be conducted to disseminate information about the two initiatives.

In the decision-making stages, the program has the Technical Secretariat and the Executive Committee. In the former case, it is composed of three representatives from the municipality, one from the company, and two councilors. Meanwhile, the Executive Committee is comprised of three community leaders, two representatives from AES Chile, and two councilors."
