With the start of operations at Andes Solar III
AES Chile adds a new project to the largest solar and storage hub in Latin America
April 14, 2026
After nearly a decade of development and more than US$1.3 billion in total investment, the company has completed another milestone within its Andes Solar Hub, reaching 692 MW of photovoltaic capacity and 510 MW of battery‑based storage.
AES announced the start of commercial operations at Andes Solar III, located in the Antofagasta Region. This marks another step forward in the expansion of the Andes Solar Hub, the largest of its kind in Latin America, which now represents a cumulative investment exceeding US$1.3 billion.
Andes Solar III is a photovoltaic plant with 171 MW of installed solar capacity and a 171 MW / three‑hour battery energy storage system (BESS), enabling the delivery of renewable and flexible energy to Chile’s National Electric System.
Javier Dib, CEO of AES Andes, said, “The start of commercial operations at Andes Solar III is a source of great pride and a key milestone in our journey, strengthening our Andes Solar Hub as the largest in Latin America and marking the completion of a strategic cycle in our transformation.”
He added, “We continue advancing with the construction of more than 2,000 MW scheduled to begin commercial operation between 2026 and 2027. This reflects AES’ strong confidence in Chile as a solid and competitive platform for continued investment in renewable energy. We will keep contributing efficiently and responsibly to the national grid, reaffirming our long‑term commitment to Chile’s sustainable energy development.”
Renewable energy generated by the Andes Solar Hub is equivalent to the consumption of nearly 800,000 households, making it a key enabler of the decarbonization of Chile’s National Electric System. This contribution is supported by a robust transmission infrastructure, with the Andes Substation serving as a critical node in the north and the connection point for InterAndes, the only international transmission line between Chile and Argentina.
With this milestone, AES Andes reinforces its commitment to the country’s energy transition, promoting solutions that combine renewable generation and storage to advance toward a more secure and efficient power system.
